An OEM Key is a special product key that is not sold to the customer. OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. It is a key that is provided specifically for large companies or chains that offer products pre-installed. OEM versions are not actually intended for direct sale to end users, i.e. customers.

A good example is the purchase of a new computer. This is purchased in a store and is usually supplied with a pre-installed operating system. Of course, this may also require a license key. For this reason, it is delivered with an OEM key. The cost of this key is usually covered by the purchase price of the product on which the software is installed.

So, the sale of these OEM versions is actually linked to the sale of a hardware to customers. Nevertheless, it can also be legal to sell these OEM versions to customers without hardware. The decisive factor is the exact contractual situation between the retailer and the manufacturer.

So you can definitely benefit from a cheaper OEM version of Microsoft Windows or Microsoft Office if you want to buy a full version. However, with an OEM version, you cannot fall back on the manufacturer's support. OEM versions of a software are full versions without any restrictions.

If you want to buy a full version, you will usually receive a retail key. This is a product key for which the buyer has paid money directly. This means that whenever a product is purchased for an individual, it comes with a retail key.

Unlike an OEM Key, the software is not pre-installed or tied to any hardware, but must be purchased separately.

In addition, these keys can usually not be used for multiple users. Of course there are exceptions. There is software that can be installed on up to 3 PCs or similar.
